Jalan Dewan is a modest local road within the village settlement of Permatang Tinggi, in Seberang Perai, Penang. Running in a north-south direction, it links Jalan Rozhan in the north with Jalan Tengah in the south, making it a practical connector for the community. Despite its short length, Jalan Dewan contributes to the intimate network of streets that gives Permatang Tinggi its unique village character.
Jalan Dewan lies parallel to Jalan Gereja, another important road in the settlement. Like its neighbour, it is flanked by village houses, small local businesses, and stretches of greenery. The road primarily serves the residents of Permatang Tinggi, providing access to their homes as well as acting as a link to larger routes beyond the village.
The environment around Jalan Dewan retains the atmosphere of a traditional Malaysian village. Houses here are typically single- or double-storey dwellings on small plots, with front yards used for gardening, drying laundry, or keeping potted plants. This quiet and unhurried lifestyle reflects the rural charm that still survives in parts of Bukit Mertajam and its surroundings.
The northern end of Jalan Dewan meets Jalan Rozhan, which is a more significant road providing access to modern amenities such as shops, eateries, and schools in the Bukit Mertajam area. On its southern end, Jalan Dewan connects to Jalan Tengah, another village road that threads deeper into the settlement. This positioning makes Jalan Dewan a practical shortcut for villagers moving within Permatang Tinggi.
Although Jalan Dewan itself is primarily residential, its proximity to Jalan Gereja places it close to one of Permatang Tinggi’s most important landmarks, the Church of the Holy Name of Mary. Additionally, the road is within walking distance of Jalan Tamil, where small local shops and services serve the daily needs of the community.
Real estate along Jalan Dewan is similar in scale and affordability to the rest of Permatang Tinggi. Properties here are generally landed village houses with built-up sizes ranging between 1,200 sq ft (111 sq m) and 2,000 sq ft (186 sq m). As of 2025, such houses in the area typically fetch between RM350,000 and RM500,000 for sale, depending on age and condition1. Rental units are rare, but where available, they command around RM900 to RM1,200 per month2.
Public transport within Permatang Tinggi is limited. Rapid Penang buses do not run directly into Jalan Dewan, but services are accessible along Jalan Rozhan, where residents can catch buses to Bukit Mertajam town and beyond3. For most residents, however, private cars and motorcycles remain the main modes of transport.
The name Dewan, which translates to “hall” in Malay, suggests that the road may have once been associated with a community hall or gathering place for the residents. While there is no large hall visible on the road today, the name preserves a reminder of the road’s possible historical function in village life.
