Tanjong Katong Road South is a significant thoroughfare in the eastern region of Singapore. The road connects Tanjong Katong Road in the north with the East Coast Parkway in the south, providing an important link between residential neighbourhoods, recreational areas, and major expressways. It lies within Marine Parade Planning Area on the west and Bedok Planning Area on the east, situating it at a junction of vibrant communities. Tanjong Katong Road South is part of Postal District 15, one of the most sought-after districts for both expatriates and locals.
The road runs north-south and is relatively short compared to other arterial roads in the east. On its northern end, it merges seamlessly with Tanjong Katong Road, a street long associated with Peranakan culture and historic shophouses. Moving southwards, Tanjong Katong Road South provides direct vehicular access to the East Coast Parkway (ECP), one of Singapore's most important expressways linking Changi Airport to the city centre. Streets nearby include Meyer Road, Fort Road, and Mountbatten Road, all of which contribute to the affluent character of the neighbourhood.
Tanjong Katong Road South is an extension of the older Tanjong Katong Road, which has been part of the Katong area since the late 19th century. The Katong district was historically home to wealthy merchants, including the Straits Chinese, who built seaside bungalows along the coast. With land reclamation during the mid-20th century, the coastline was pushed further south, and new roads like Tanjong Katong Road South were laid out to connect inland neighbourhoods to reclaimed coastal areas and the newly constructed expressways1.
The name “Tanjong Katong” derives from the Malay words tanjong, meaning “cape,” and katong, a type of sea turtle that was once found along the coastline. The road name thus reflects the area's coastal heritage. In English spelling, it is commonly pronounced as “Tan-jong Ka-tong”. The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) transcription is /ˈtændʒɒŋ ˈkɑːtɒŋ/.
Tanjong Katong Road South has a character that blends modern residential developments with leisure-oriented amenities. On one side, there are high-rise condominiums offering views of the sea and East Coast Park, while on the other, busier stretches connect to the expressway. The atmosphere is quieter than central Katong, with wide roads, tree-lined pavements, and easy access to coastal parks. It is a place where residents enjoy both urban conveniences and recreational proximity to the sea.
While Tanjong Katong Road South itself is more functional than commercial, several attractions lie close by:
The road falls within District 15, one of the most expensive non-prime residential districts in Singapore. Properties here are predominantly private condominiums and apartments. As of 2025, average transacted prices for freehold condominiums in the vicinity range between SGD 2,200 to SGD 2,800 per square foot (psf)2. For example, a 1,200 sq ft (111.5 sq m) three-bedroom unit could fetch between SGD 2.64 million to SGD 3.36 million on the resale market.
Rental prices are equally high. Monthly rents for similar-sized units are typically between SGD 6,000 and SGD 8,500, reflecting strong demand from expatriates who value proximity to international schools, East Coast Park, and the city centre. Compared to the national average of SGD 4,500 for private condominiums, Tanjong Katong Road South commands a premium due to its coastal location and lifestyle appeal.
The nearest MRT station is Tanjong Katong MRT Station (TE25), located along the Thomson-East Coast Line. This line connects residents to Marina Bay, Orchard, and Woodlands. Other nearby stations include Katong Park and Marine Parade, both of which further enhance transport accessibility.
Several bus stops are located along and near Tanjong Katong Road South. They provide connections to the central business district, Paya Lebar, and Changi Airport. Bus routes commonly seen here include feeder services as well as long-haul services that run along the East Coast corridor.
One fun fact about Tanjong Katong Road South is that it is located very close to the site of the historic Katong Park, which was once a popular seaside retreat before land reclamation moved the shoreline further south. Today, the park is inland but still bears the name, reminding locals of the shifting coastline over the years. The road also serves as an informal marker dividing the traditional Katong heritage belt from the modern, reclaimed East Coast residential estates.
