Quick Facts

Name and Etymology

The name “Tampines” comes from the Malay word tempinis, referring to the ironwood trees (Streblus elongatus) that once grew in the region. In Chinese, Tampines West is written as 淡滨尼西 (Dànbīnní Xī), meaning “Tampines West.” The name reflects its position within Tampines new town, one of the largest housing estates in Singapore.

History

Like much of Tampines, Tampines West was once covered with sand quarries, farms, and kampongs before the Housing and Development Board (HDB) began transforming the area in the 1980s. It became one of the first parts of Tampines to be developed, alongside Tampines East, as part of Singapore’s ambitious plan to decentralise urban growth from the Downtown Core Planning Area. The development of Temasek Polytechnic in 1990 further anchored Tampines West as an educational hub.

Tampines West lies in the western part of the Tampines Planning Area. It is bordered by Tampines North to the north, Tampines East to the east, Simei to the southeast, Bedok Reservoir Subzone to the southwest, and Paya Lebar East to the west.
