Quick Facts

Name and Etymology

The name “Pasir Ris” (白沙, Báishā) literally means “white sand” in Malay, referring to the long sandy beaches that once lined the coastline. The subzone name “Central” indicates its role as the nucleus of the town, where administrative, retail, and community facilities are concentrated.

History

Pasir Ris Central was developed in the late 1980s and early 1990s as part of the Housing & Development Board (HDB) town-building programme. It was designed to anchor the new town of Pasir Ris with a transport hub, town plaza, and central shopping facilities. Over the years, it has grown to include modern malls such as White Sands and integrated community hubs, while still retaining its role as the town’s focal point.

Geography and Boundaries

Pasir Ris Central occupies 1.511 sq km and is strategically located in the heart of Pasir Ris. It is bounded by Pasir Ris Park to the north, Pasir Ris Drive to the east, Tampines North to the south, and Pasir Ris West to the west. Its central location ensures accessibility to all parts of Pasir Ris while connecting directly with neighbouring towns.

Population and Demographics

As of 2024, Pasir Ris Central has a population of 31,730 residents. With a density of 20,993 per sq km, it is among the most densely populated subzones in the east of Singapore. Between 2020 and 2024, the population experienced a slight decline of -0.40%, reflecting demographic shifts such as ageing households and limited new land for large-scale development1.

Land Use and Character

The subzone is primarily residential but is distinguished by its vibrant mix of commercial and civic uses. It houses the town centre, featuring shopping malls, dining establishments, and service amenities. The presence of HDB blocks, recreational facilities, and retail hubs gives the area a lively urban character, distinct from quieter subzones like Loyang West.

Transport and Connectivity

Pasir Ris Central is a major transport hub in eastern Singapore. The Pasir Ris MRT Station on the East-West Line provides residents with direct connections to the city and other towns. By 2030, the Cross Island Line will also serve Pasir Ris, enhancing connectivity. The subzone also hosts the Pasir Ris Bus Interchange, linking it to surrounding estates and workplaces. For drivers, the Tampines Expressway (TPE) offers quick access to the rest of the island.

Community and Amenities

As the civic hub, Pasir Ris Central is home to the Pasir Ris Polyclinic, community clubs, and educational institutions. White Sands Mall serves as the primary retail destination, while nearby sports and recreation centres support active lifestyles. Residents also enjoy easy access to the expansive Pasir Ris Park for leisure and nature-based activities.

Neighbourhood Identity

Pasir Ris Central is synonymous with the “heart of Pasir Ris.” It is where residents gather for shopping, dining, commuting, and community activities. The presence of civic spaces and transport facilities reinforces its identity as the heartbeat of the planning area, similar to town centres in other HDB new towns.

Interesting Sights

White Sands Mall is the key landmark of Pasir Ris Central, attracting shoppers from across the town. The central plaza near the MRT station often hosts community events, bazaars, and festive celebrations. Its proximity to Pasir Ris Park also makes it convenient for families and outdoor enthusiasts to combine shopping with leisure.
