Oxford Road is a short local road in Singapore, located in the Kallang Planning Area within postal district 8. Measuring approximately 290 metres in total length, it consists of two branches. The main branch is a one-way street connecting Owen Road in the southwest to Rangoon Road in the northeast, while a secondary branch links the main road in the northwest to Dorset Road in the southeast. Together, the two branches form a small but integral part of the Farrer Park residential grid.
Oxford Road was built in the early 20th century as part of the residential expansion of Farrer Park, a neighbourhood shaped by the colonial urban grid system. Its two-branch design demonstrates the way side streets were adapted to connect residents to larger roads like Rangoon Road and Dorset Road while maintaining a quieter residential character.
The road is named after Oxford, the historic English city renowned for its prestigious university. Like neighbouring Cambridge Road, Bristol Road, and Hertford Road, the name reflects the colonial-era practice of commemorating notable English towns and cities in Singapore’s street network.
Oxford Road is primarily a residential street, lined with Housing and Development Board (HDB) blocks, low-rise apartments, and supporting amenities. The main branch’s one-way layout helps regulate traffic flow, ensuring safe pedestrian movement in this dense urban area. The neighbourhood is known for its peaceful setting despite its central location.
The main branch of Oxford Road connects Owen Road to Rangoon Road, while the secondary branch links to Dorset Road. This provides convenient access to neighbouring roads such as Carlisle Road, Truro Road, and Cambridge Road, forming a well-connected grid within District 8.
Although Oxford Road itself has no major landmarks, its location places it close to several key amenities. The Pek Kio Market and Food Centre is within easy walking distance, providing a variety of local hawker fare. Residents also benefit from proximity to City Square Mall, Mustafa Centre, and healthcare facilities at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
Residential properties in the Oxford Road area reflect the demand for central locations in District 8. As of 2024, private apartments in the vicinity typically range from SGD 1,600 to SGD 2,300 per sq ft1. A 1,000 sq ft (93 sq m) unit would therefore be valued at SGD 1.6 million to SGD 2.3 million. Rental rates range from SGD 3,500 to SGD 5,500 per month. Public housing nearby, particularly 3- to 5-room HDB flats, have resale values between SGD 500,000 and SGD 800,000, with monthly rentals averaging SGD 2,200 to SGD 3,500.
Oxford Road enjoys strong connectivity despite its modest size. The nearest MRT station is Farrer Park MRT (NE8) on the North East Line, just a short walk away. Several bus stops along Rangoon Road and Dorset Road provide further links across the island. For motorists, the Central Expressway (CTE) is nearby, offering quick access to central and northern Singapore.
Oxford Road’s one-way main branch is unusual in this neighbourhood, as most surrounding streets allow two-way traffic. This design reflects careful urban planning to manage traffic volumes between the busy Rangoon Road and the quieter residential lanes of Farrer Park.
