Kallang, Singapore

The Kallang Planning Area (Simplified Chinese: 加冷, Traditional Chinese: 加冷, Pinyin: Jiā Lěng, Malay: Kallang, Tamil: கல்லாங்) is located in the Central Region of Singapore. Covering 9.17 square kilometres, Kallang had a residential population of around 110,000 in 2020¹. The planning area is best known for the Singapore Sports Hub, Kallang Basin, and its rich mix of housing estates, from public housing to upscale condominiums. It lies mainly within Postal Districts 12, 13, and 14.

History of Kallang

The name “Kallang” is believed to derive from the Malay word “kelang,” meaning “mill” or “factory.” Some historians suggest it may also come from the orang kallang, a group of early sea nomads who lived along the Kallang River. In the 19th century, Kallang was home to boat builders, sawmills, and industries along the riverbanks. During the 20th century, it became well known for the old National Stadium, which hosted countless sports and cultural events until its demolition in 2010. Today, Kallang is a modern residential and recreational hub.
