Owen Road is a historic street in Singapore, measuring approximately 500 metres in length. It connects Race Course Road at its southern end to Norfolk Road at its northern end. Situated within the Kallang Planning Area, Owen Road lies in postal district 8, a vibrant neighbourhood near the boundary of Little India and Novena. The nearest MRT station is Farrer Park MRT Station (NE8) on the North East Line, which provides direct links to Dhoby Ghaut, HarbourFront, and Punggol.
Owen Road dates back to the early 20th century and was laid out during the colonial period when the surrounding Farrer Park area was being developed into a residential and institutional district. The road became an important connector between Race Course Road, which historically served the Singapore Turf Club, and the newer residential streets such as Norfolk Road. Over time, Owen Road developed a lively character, lined with shophouses that provided essential goods and services to nearby residents. During the mid-20th century, it was also known for its small family-run eateries and provision shops, many of which have since given way to modern cafés, hostels, and boutique hotels.
The road is believed to be named after a colonial-era figure with the surname “Owen,” although precise records are scarce. It was common practice during British rule in Singapore to name streets after administrators, engineers, or other individuals associated with the colonial government. Like many other streets in the area, Owen Road reflects the island’s layered colonial history and its influence on place naming.
Owen Road today retains much of its old-world charm, with rows of conserved shophouses on both sides. Many of these buildings now house restaurants, budget hotels, boutique lodgings, and cafés that cater to both locals and visitors. The mix of traditional trades and modern establishments makes Owen Road a microcosm of the wider Farrer Park–Little India area. The street also benefits from its proximity to City Square Mall and Mustafa Centre, which attract heavy foot traffic to the neighbourhood.
At its southern end, Owen Road meets Race Course Road, historically associated with the former horse-racing grounds of the Singapore Turf Club. To the north, it connects with Norfolk Road, a quieter residential street. Other nearby roads include Rangoon Road, Dorset Road, and Moulmein Road, which form part of the wider network of streets in the Farrer Park and Novena districts.
Several landmarks and points of interest are located around Owen Road. The area is served by Farrer Park MRT Station, providing convenient transport access. Mustafa Centre, a 24-hour shopping complex, is a short walk away and remains one of the most famous attractions in Little India. City Square Mall, with its retail and dining options, is also within walking distance. On Owen Road itself, visitors can find heritage shophouses, boutique hotels, and dining spots that range from local eateries to international cuisines. Religious sites, such as temples and churches, are scattered throughout the surrounding neighbourhood, reflecting the area’s cultural diversity.
Owen Road falls within District 8, an area where property prices have steadily appreciated due to its central location. A typical 1,000 sq ft (93 sq m) unit may cost between SGD 2.0 million and SGD 2.4 million. Rentals in the vicinity range from SGD 3,800 to SGD 6,200 per month, depending on the size and type of unit. While there are no HDB blocks directly on Owen Road, nearby estates in the Kallang and Whampoa areas provide public housing options at more affordable rates.
The nearest MRT station is Farrer Park MRT (NE8) on the North East Line, just a short walk from Owen Road. This line connects directly to Dhoby Ghaut, Chinatown, and HarbourFront. Bus stops along Owen Road and adjacent streets provide frequent services to Novena, Orchard Road, and the Central Business District. For drivers, Owen Road links easily to the Central Expressway (CTE) via Moulmein Road and Balestier Road, ensuring good accessibility to other parts of the island.
A fun fact about Owen Road is that it has long been known as a food street. In the mid-20th century, it was home to popular noodle and kopi stalls frequented by residents of the Farrer Park area. Even today, the street remains associated with small eateries that continue the tradition of serving affordable meals to locals and visitors alike.
