The name "Monk's Hill" is believed to have originated in the 19th century, when the area was a small rise of land used for plantation agriculture and later associated with missionary and educational institutions. The history of Monk's Hill can be traced back to the mid-1800s, when the surrounding Newton area was first developed for European settlement. In 1910, the establishment of Monk's Hill School gave the subzone its educational identity, shaping the community for much of the 20th century. The school became a landmark institution until its merger with Balestier Hill Secondary in 20071. The subzone, though compact, has remained tied to education and community heritage over the decades.
Monk's Hill Subzone covers an area of just 0.1726 square kilometres, making it one of the smaller subzones of Newton. It is bounded by Moulmein to the north, Istana Negara Subzone to the east, Cairnhill to the west, and Newton Circus to the northwest. Despite its compact footprint, the subzone is well integrated into the wider Newton area.
As of 2024, Monk's Hill has a population of approximately 1,170 people, with a density of 6,777 residents per square kilometre2. This marks a modest population growth of 3.2% since 2020. The population consists of a mix of long-term residents in public housing and newer arrivals in private condominiums, reflecting the balance of heritage and modernity in the neighbourhood.
The subzone is largely residential, with a blend of HDB flats and private condominiums. It retains an educational and community character through the legacy of its schools and nearby amenities. The nearest MRT stops are Newton MRT Station on the North-South Line and Downtown Line, and Orchard MRT Station on the North-South Line and Thomson-East Coast Line. Major roads like Bukit Timah Road and Clemenceau Avenue North ensure easy road access, while the Central Expressway links the subzone to other parts of the island.
Amenities in Monk's Hill are closely tied to its residential character. The area is served by neighbourhood parks, educational institutions, and nearby shopping malls such as United Square and Novena Square. Community services in adjacent subzones also support the needs of residents, making the locality self-sufficient despite its small footprint.
