Cairnhill is an upscale subzone within the Newton Planning Area in Singapore. Covering 0.4515 sq km, it has a population of 4,630 as of 2024, with a population density of 10,254 per sq km1. Cairnhill is famed for its luxury residential developments, boutique shops, and proximity to Orchard Road.
The name Cairnhill (凯恩山, Kǎi ēn shān in pinyin) is believed to be derived from the early colonial period, possibly referencing a prominent hill or estate owned by European settlers. "Cairn" traditionally refers to a small man-made pile of stones, indicating a landmark.
Cairnhill was developed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as part of Singapore’s expansion beyond the city centre. The area attracted wealthy European and Peranakan families, with grand colonial houses and bungalows built along the hill. Over time, many of these were replaced or supplemented by high-end condominiums and apartments.
Cairnhill is strategically located in central Singapore, bounded by Newton Circus to the north, Monk's Hill to the east, Somerset to the south, Boulevard to the west, and Goodwood Park Subzone to the northwest. Its gently sloping terrain adds to the distinctiveness of the neighbourhood.
The subzone has 4,630 residents (2024 estimate), with a steady growth of 4.5% from 2020–20241. The population is predominantly affluent professionals and expatriates, with a mix of local Singaporean families.
Cairnhill is primarily residential with commercial elements. Luxury condominiums and heritage bungalows dominate the area, while boutique shops, cafes, and small commercial offices add vibrancy. The subzone blends colonial architecture with modern high-rise living.
The area is well-connected via Somerset MRT Station and Dhoby Ghaut MRT Station. Major roads such as Cairnhill Road, Orchard Road, and Scotts Road provide easy access to the city centre and expressways like Pan Island Expressway. Bus services and pedestrian pathways link residents to nearby amenities.
Cairnhill offers a quiet, exclusive community feel. Nearby amenities include shopping at Orchard Road, the Istana grounds, and local dining options. Parks, fitness clubs, and international schools contribute to the neighbourhood’s appeal for families and expatriates.
The subzone is identified with luxury, convenience, and historical prestige. It is considered a prime residential enclave close to Singapore’s central business district and entertainment hubs, attracting high-income residents seeking both heritage charm and modern living.
Housing in Cairnhill is predominantly private condominiums and heritage residences. Typical unit sizes range from 900–2,000 sq ft, with selling prices around SGD 2.5M–8M. Monthly rental rates vary between SGD 4,500–12,000 depending on unit size and location.
Cairnhill is historically associated with elite social clubs and European expatriates during colonial Singapore, some of which still retain their architectural charm and exclusivity.
