Mergui Road is a short street in Singapore, located within the Kallang Planning Area in postal district 8. Measuring approximately 170 metres in length, the road begins at Kent Road and terminates at a cul-de-sac. Though compact in scale, Mergui Road adds to the intricate network of residential lanes in the Farrer Park neighbourhood.
Mergui Road was established in the early 20th century, during the gradual urbanisation of the Farrer Park area. Its design as a cul-de-sac reflects the era’s planning style, which often incorporated smaller, quieter roads branching off from larger thoroughfares. Over the decades, the road has remained primarily residential, maintaining a tranquil character despite the busier environment nearby.
The name “Mergui” refers to the Mergui Archipelago, a cluster of islands off the coast of Myanmar (formerly Burma). This reflects Singapore’s colonial-era practice of naming streets after foreign places, particularly within the British sphere of influence. The pronunciation follows standard English phonetics: Mer-goo-ee /ˈmɜːrɡwi/.
Mergui Road is lined with low-rise apartment buildings, boutique condominiums, and a few landed properties. The street is notably quiet due to its cul-de-sac layout, making it appealing to families and those who prefer less through-traffic. Its residential charm is complemented by tree-lined verges and the sense of community found in smaller neighbourhood streets.
The road connects directly to Kent Road, which provides access to nearby Owen Road and Rangoon Road. Other surrounding streets in this grid include Hertford Road, Truro Road, and Cambridge Road. Together, these streets form part of the heritage-rich Farrer Park subdistrict.
Though Mergui Road itself does not feature major landmarks, its proximity to key attractions is notable. The nearby Pek Kio Market and Food Centre is a popular spot for hawker fare, while City Square Mall along Kitchener Road provides retail and dining conveniences. Religious landmarks, such as Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple on Serangoon Road, are also within walking distance.
Residential properties on Mergui Road include boutique condominiums and walk-up apartments. As of 2024, private condominiums in this area command prices of approximately SGD 1,800 to SGD 2,300 per sq ft1. A typical 900 sq ft (84 sq m) apartment may cost between SGD 1.6 million and SGD 2.1 million. Rental rates range from about SGD 2,800 to SGD 4,500 per month depending on size and condition. Compared to the Singapore average, Mergui Road’s property values reflect the central and accessible nature of District 8.
The nearest MRT station is Farrer Park MRT Station (NE8), served by the North East Line. From here, residents can reach Dhoby Ghaut, HarbourFront, and other key destinations directly. Several bus stops are located along nearby Owen Road and Rangoon Road, offering additional connectivity. Motorists can quickly access the Central Expressway (CTE) for convenient travel across the island.
Mergui Road is one of the few roads in Singapore named after a place in Myanmar. This makes it part of a unique group of colonial-era street names that highlight Singapore’s historic links to wider Southeast Asia, beyond the more common British or Indian references.
