Cook Street, Singapore

Cook Street, SingaporeCook Street, Singapore (11 July 2011)

Cook Street is a minor street in the Chinatown subzone of Outram, Singapore. This short street links Tanjong Pagar Road with Tras Street. It is a one-way street with traffic going in the direction from Tras Street to Tanjong Pagar Road.

As may be suspected, the naming of Cook Street has nothing to do with the culinary profession. Instead it was named in honour of Reverend J.A. Bethune Cook, a missionary of the English Presbyterian Christian Mission, which was located on the street.

There are no traces of Cook's missionary work on the street today. It has erased most of its past, and is today occupied by a hotel, a bar and a wedding house.
