Jalan Seang Tek, George Town, Penang (30 June 2018)


Jalan Seang Tek, formerly known as Seang Tek Road, is a minor road in George Town, Penang. It runs from Dato Kramat Road to Anson Road. At the Dato Kramat Road end, it is roughly across from the Kuantan Road Market while on the Anson Road end, it is beside the Anson Road Market. Seang Tek Road also forms junctions with Selangor Road, Naning Street and Krian Road.

Seang Tek Road was named after Koh Seang Tek, the great grandson of Koh Lay Huan, who was the first and only Kapitan Cina of Penang. His elder brother is Koh Seang Tat who donated the Municipal Fountain in George Town and the Balik Pulau Fountain as well as donated to build the Balik Pulau Hospital.

Seang Tek was known for being the first citizen to operate an ice factory which was located on Penang Street, earning him a distrinct for pioneering ice making in the country. He has four sons namely Koh Leap Hean, Koh Leap Beng, Koh Leap Cheng and Koh Leap Teng. Koh Seang Tek died at the early age of 36 in 1874 shortly after the birth of his youngest son.

Seang Tek Road which was named after him, was the site for the old Chinese Club which was founded by him and had its initial premises there.

Getting there

The nearest bus stops are at Dato Kramat Road and Anson Road Rapid Penang Bus 11, 201, 202, 203, 204, 206, 301, 302 and 502 pass through Dato Kramat Road while 10 and 104 pass through Anson Road.
