Mandeville Place, London

Mandeville Place is a street in Marylebone, connecting Hinde Street in the north to Wigmore Street in the south. It runs parallel to Welbeck Street and Wimpole Street, forming part of the grid layout that characterises this part of the West End. The street provides both a residential and institutional presence, reflecting the mixed-use nature of Marylebone.

History of Mandeville Place

The origins of Mandeville Place can be traced to the late 18th century, when the Portman Estate oversaw much of the development of Marylebone. The street took its name from the Mandeville family, connected to the Portmans by marriage, and was laid out as part of the estate's expansion to the south of Hinde Street. Early houses here were typical Georgian townhouses, many of which have been replaced or altered over time but still inform the character of the area.

During the 19th century, the street became home to professionals and minor gentry, with several houses adapted for institutional or educational use. This pattern has continued into the modern day, where Mandeville Place retains a balance between office, school, and residential functions.

Notable Buildings

Mandeville Place is home to several buildings of architectural and cultural interest:

Present Day Character

Today, Mandeville Place is a quieter street compared to its southern neighbour Wigmore Street. It is characterised by institutional buildings, schools, offices, and some residential properties. The street also benefits from mature trees and wider pavements, lending it a more secluded and academic atmosphere despite being only a short walk from the bustle of Oxford Street.

Pedestrian activity is largely connected to the nearby schools and offices, with less retail presence than adjoining streets. Nevertheless, its central location makes Mandeville Place a convenient thoroughfare linking Hinde Street and Wigmore Street.

Nearby Streets

Mandeville Place runs in parallel with Welbeck Street to the west and Wimpole Street to the east. To the north, it connects with Hinde Street, which continues westward toward Manchester Square. At its southern end, it meets Wigmore Street, one of the major east–west arteries of Marylebone.
