Canon Row is a short but historically significant street located in the heart of
Westminster, London, within the
City of Westminster. It runs from
Derby Gate at its northern end to
Bridge Street at its southern end, placing it just steps from the
Palace of Westminster and the
River Thames.
Location and Connections
Canon Row connects directly to Bridge Street at the south, which leads to
Westminster Bridge and
Parliament Square, and to Derby Gate at the north, with access to
Whitehall. It lies west of
Portcullis House, and is parallel to
Victoria Embankment. The street is primarily used for official and administrative purposes today, and access may be restricted in parts due to security protocols around the Houses of Parliament.
Origin of the Name
Canon Row derives its name from the Canons of Westminster, who once lived in residences along this very street during the medieval period. The area was part of the precincts of
Westminster Abbey, and in earlier centuries, Canon Row was known for its grand townhouses and ecclesiastical connections. Over time, the noble and clerical associations gave way to government use.
The name "Canon Row" dates back at least to the 13th century, appearing in historic records as the residential quarter for these ecclesiastical dignitaries. By the 16th and 17th centuries, it had become fashionable with nobles and courtiers due to its proximity to the royal palace.
Notable Buildings
Today, Canon Row is notable mainly for housing part of the Parliamentary Estate, including the Canon Row Police Station (now closed, but once a significant Metropolitan Police station serving Parliament) and entrances to secure government buildings.
Nearest Underground Station
The nearest Underground station to Canon Row is
Westminster Station, served by the
Jubilee,
District, and
Circle lines.
Getting there
To reach Canon Row from Westminster Underground Station, exit the station using the Bridge Street exit (Exit 1). Once outside, you will see Big Ben (Elizabeth Tower) and the Palace of Westminster directly ahead. Turn right (westward) onto Bridge Street. Within a few metres, the junction of Canon Row will appear on your left, between 1 Parliament Street and Portcullis House.
