There are numerous bakeries and pastry shops in Penang. They range from those operated by Indians to upscale pâtisseries and boulangeries. Most hypermarkets and department store would have a bakery outlet as well. They churn out a dazzling array of breads, ranging from the churning out the traditional roti benggali to various types of pastries and cakes. Among the popular chains of bakeries and cake shops include Roti Boy, Bread U Us and cake shop Secret Recipe.

I paid a visit to Continental Bakery on 8 August 2013, as some friends told me they liked the buns here. I bought apple pies, croissants and a chocolate-cheese bun. It was the Hari Raya holidays and I was off by no-carbohydrate diet for four days. I had the apple pie at tea time, and the croissants the following morning.
