Upper Weld Quay Waterfront Promenade is one of the three waterfront promenades proposed in the
George Town Special Area Plan. The promenade is proposed to run along
Weld Quay from
Swettenham Pier until
Pengkalan Raja Tun Uda, where it continues as the
Clan Jetties Waterfront Promenade. Pedestrians walking the 860-meter promenade get a scenic view of the working harbour.
Appreciating the Historical Significance of this Site
The site of the Upper Weld Quay Waterfront Promenade dates to the turn of the 20th century, when land reclamation to expand the Penang Port created Weld Quay. Until then, the shoreline followed
Beach Street. During the days of Francis Light, there was a pier linking
Light Street to Light's residence, where
his well is still to be seen today.
The rapid expansion of Penang Port from the second half of the 19th century, due in part to increase in traffic brought on by Larut tin mining, and the introduction of steam ships in place of sailing ships, resulted in the late 19th century land reclamation. The shoreline was extended outwards, creating the busy harbour view that is seen in early 20th century postcards.
