Clan Jetties Waterfront Promenade is an esplanade proposed by the
George Town Special Area Plan. It covers a distance of 670 meters on the south side of
Weld Quay, forming a boundary to the proposed
Clan Jetty Parks.
Appreciating the History of this Site
The waterfront promenade named after the Clan Jetties is in fact a comparatively recent addition to the history of George Town. It came into being after the reclamation works which was carried out to expand the Penang Port, at the turn of the 20th century. The reclamation created new land and a new sea frontage which became Weld Quay.
The Clan Jetties Waterfront Promenade will be a visible introduction for visitors coming to Penang Island. Just as passengers in ocean liners in the past century got their first sight of George Town from here, so too present-day ferry passengers catch the first sight of George Town here.
