Clan Jetty Parks is a proposed urban park under the
George Town Special Area Plan. It encompasses the traditional
Clan Jetties. I would expect some form of gentrification to take place when the park is created. Improvement to sewage and sanitation to the jetties will help to enhance the living standard of this area.
Appreciating the History of this Site
The Clan Jetties of George Town is a comparatively recent arrival, in the city's over two-hundred-year history. The very site itself was only created at the turn of the 20th century, when expansion of the Penang Port resulted in land reclamation for more warehousing, as well as for deeper anchorage of the steam ships.
The Clan Jetties were created to house the influx of immigrants from China, who arrived as indentured labourers, stevedores or "coolies", to work in the Penang Port. Different clan built their own respective waterborne neighbourhood, resulting in jetties bearing the clan surnames.
Today the Clan Jetties are but a remnant of the glorious past of Penang Port. Few, if any, of the present inhabitants of the jetties work at the port itself. Even the houses may not house people of the original clan. Nonetheless, the Clan Jetties offer a glimpse of a yesteryear Penang that has somehow been suspended in time.
