George Town World Heritage Site Special Area Plan is a plan prepared to guide and control the development taken within the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site. The plan is exhibited for public viewing from 11 April to 9 May, 2011, from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm daily at George Town World Heritage Inc., Komtar Concourse Area and at the Town Hall.
The preparation of a Special Area Plan (SAP) for the World Heritage Site of George Town is a multi-step process. It starts when the local planning authority identifies the planning area. Once this is completed, a Draft SAP is prepared.
To ensure buy-in from the general public and stakeholders, the completed Draft SAP is then exhibited (as is being done right now) for no less than two weeks.
After the public has been given the opportunity to view the draft plan, the local authority holds inquiries and hearings to gather objections and requests for amendments to the Draft SAP.
The Draft SAP is then either approved as a whole, or approved with modification, or rejected outright. Unless it is rejected, the Special Area Plan then comes into effect for the George Town World Heritage Site.
