Gerbang Heah Swee Lee was named after early 20th century millionaire Hean Swee Lee, whose legacy includes Northam Lodge and the Penang Lawn Tennis Association Heah Swee Lee Cup. The Heah Swee Lee Challenge Cup was established in 1948 and is today the oldest tennis team competition in Penang.
Heah Swee Lee's father was a 19th Teochew planter, Heah Jin Wooi, was also a prominent figure. He was a sugarcane baron in Kuala Kurau. The historical Heah Mansion in Bukit Tambun was built by Heah Jin Wooi. Heah Swee Lee was born in 1875. Heah Swee Lee eventually inherited his father's 2,000-acre estate, the Jin Heng Estate.
