The name Tiong Bahru is the amalgamation of two words, one in Hokkien and another in Malay. The Hokkien word Tiong is actually theong4 塚, meaning cemetery, while the word Bahru means new in Malay. Therefore, Tiong Bahru translates as New Cemetery. It refers to the then new cemetery beside the Old Chinese Burial Ground on the site of the present-day Singapore General Hospital.
