Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) (GPS: 1.28105, 103.83604) is the country’s leading institution dedicated to eye care. Located within the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) Campus at Outram Road, SNEC offers comprehensive ophthalmology services ranging from routine eye checks to advanced surgeries. It is a national specialty centre under the SingHealth cluster, playing a key role in delivering patient care, conducting research, and training eye specialists in Singapore and beyond.
SNEC was established in 1990 to centralize and enhance ophthalmic care in Singapore. Prior to its creation, eye services were provided by general hospitals. The establishment of SNEC allowed for concentrated expertise and resources, making it possible to handle a wide range of eye conditions, from cataracts to retinal diseases1.
The centre is located at the Singapore General Hospital Campus, within the central medical hub of Outram Road.
The campus is also easily accessible via the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) and Central Expressway (CTE).
SNEC provides comprehensive ophthalmic services, including:
SNEC works closely with the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI), which is internationally recognized for its contributions to ophthalmic science. Together, they have produced groundbreaking research in myopia, glaucoma, and retinal diseases. The centre is also an academic hub, training ophthalmologists, optometrists, and allied health staff in collaboration with Duke-NUS Medical School2.
Beyond its clinical services, SNEC engages in public outreach through vision screening programs, health education talks, and initiatives to prevent blindness in the community. It also runs subsidized clinics to ensure accessibility to quality eye care3.
SNEC is one of the busiest eye centres in Asia, with more than 170,000 patient visits annually and performing over 30,000 major eye surgeries every year4.
