Novena MRT Station was officially opened on 12 December 1987 as part of the Phase 1/early expansion of the North–South Line. 1

Originally during planning its working name was “Thomson” station, before being renamed to “Novena” in November 1982 to reflect the nearby Novena Church (Church of St. Alphonsus). 1

The station was constructed beneath what was once a Jewish cemetery located along Thomson Road; during construction in 1984–85 the graves were cleared and reinterred in Choa Chu Kang. 1

Local folklore also holds that Novena station is one of the more “haunted” MRT stations in Singapore, owing to the cemetery clearance and its early underground construction. 1
