Moongate, Singapore (1 August 2017)
Moongate (GPS: 1.28568, 103.86223) is a sculpture at
Gardens by the Bay, Singapore. It is located at the Active Garden at the waterfront promenade, on the south bank of the
Singapore River. Standing at a height of 3.8 metres, it was designed by sculptor Chong Fah Cheong, drawing inspiration from the
Moon Gate which he saw when he was in his youth at the
Penang Botanic Gardens. The outer side of the sculpture is smooth while the inner side has various undulating grooves.
The Moongate is envisioned as a portal for exploring ideas of journeying and arriving, encouraging viewers of the sculpture to imagine the possibilities for Singapore's history.
In addition to its abstract purpose, Moongate also marks the spot for the SG50 Time Capsule, which stores 50 item clusters representing Singapore's diversity, values and aspirations. It was sealed on the 50th anniversary of Singapore's independence by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and will be opened in 2065, at Singapore's 100th Anniversary of Independence.
