Meyer Road is one of the most prominent residential roads in eastern Singapore. Stretching from Tanjong Rhu Road and Fort Road in the west to Tanjong Katong Road in the east, it lies within the Marine Parade Planning Area, forming part of the prestigious District 15. The road is well known for its upscale residential character, coastal proximity, and scenic greenery. Its nearest MRT stations are Katong Park MRT Station (TE24) and Tanjong Katong MRT Station (TE25), both on the Thomson-East Coast Line.
Meyer Road is a tree-lined road that runs parallel to the East Coast Parkway (ECP), providing residents and visitors with quick access to the Central Business District as well as Changi Airport. The road is surrounded by a mix of luxury condominiums, landed properties, and a few heritage bungalows, giving it a highly residential yet exclusive character. With the sea just a short walk away, the area provides a balance between city convenience and serene coastal living.
The road intersects with smaller residential streets such as Crescent Road, Broadrick Road, and Jalan Nuri, which lead deeper into private residential estates. Its location at the edge of East Coast Park makes it one of the most desirable addresses in District 15.
Meyer Road was named after Sir Reuben Manasseh Meyer (1846–1930), a wealthy Jewish businessman and philanthropist who made his fortune in shipping, banking, and opium trade. He was one of the earliest Jewish settlers in Singapore and was instrumental in the establishment of synagogues and community institutions1. The road was laid out during the late 19th to early 20th century as part of the development of seaside bungalows along Katong and Tanjong Katong. It has since evolved into a hub for upscale condominiums and continues to carry his legacy through its name.
The name “Meyer” is pronounced in common English spelling as MY-er, and in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) as /ˈmaɪər/.
Meyer Road exudes an affluent, serene, and coastal atmosphere. The street is relatively quiet compared to busier arteries such as Mountbatten Road or Marine Parade Road. Its low-density layout, proximity to East Coast Park, and leafy ambiance make it highly attractive to families, expatriates, and retirees. Residents enjoy lifestyle conveniences such as international schools, shopping malls like Parkway Parade, and food havens in Katong and Joo Chiat, all within short driving distance.
Meyer Road is one of the most expensive residential enclaves in the east. Properties here include luxury condominiums such as Meyer Mansion, The Belvedere, and Aalto, as well as freehold landed homes. As of mid-2025, condominium units on Meyer Road typically range from 1,200 sq ft (111 sq m) to over 3,500 sq ft (325 sq m). Smaller units sell for around SGD 2.5 million, while larger penthouses can exceed SGD 8 million2.
Rental rates are equally premium, with two-bedroom apartments (approx. 900–1,200 sq ft / 84–111 sq m) commanding between SGD 6,000–8,000 per month, while larger family-sized apartments may exceed SGD 12,000 monthly. These prices are considerably higher than the average for Singapore, reflecting the exclusive status of Meyer Road as a residential address.
Residents of Meyer Road enjoy excellent transport links. The nearest MRT stations are Katong Park MRT Station (TE24) and Tanjong Katong MRT Station (TE25), both part of the Thomson-East Coast Line. These stations provide direct access to Marina Bay, Orchard, and Woodlands when fully operational.
Several bus stops are located along Meyer Road itself, served by routes connecting to Marine Parade, Mountbatten, and the city. The East Coast Parkway (ECP) runs parallel to the road, offering swift access to downtown Singapore and Changi Airport.
A unique fun fact about Meyer Road is that it was once lined with seaside mansions that had private piers extending into the sea. Reclamation of land in the 1970s for the East Coast Parkway shifted the coastline further out, and today East Coast Park occupies that reclaimed land. Nevertheless, the aura of exclusivity remains, making Meyer Road one of the few addresses in Singapore that has transformed from colonial seaside retreat to modern luxury enclave.
