The Marina South Planning Area (Simplified Chinese: 滨海南, Traditional Chinese: 濱海南, Pinyin: Bīn Hǎi Nán, Malay: Marina South, Tamil: மரினா சவுத்) is a reclaimed planning area in the Central Region of Singapore. It covers about 2.62 square kilometres and currently has almost no residential population1. Instead, Marina South is being shaped into a major future downtown extension, with plans for mixed-use neighbourhoods comprising homes, offices, and lifestyle amenities. It lies within Postal District 1.
Marina South was formed through large-scale land reclamation in the 1970s and 1980s, as part of Singapore’s long-term strategy to expand its southern coastline. Initially, it was used for interim recreational facilities, such as open-air car parks, flea markets, and the Marina South Pier. The area’s identity began to shift in the 2000s with the construction of Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay nearby. URA’s Master Plan now positions Marina South as a key site for sustainable, waterfront-oriented urban living.
“Marina South” is pronounced Mah-ree-nah Sowth, with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) transcription /məˈriː.nə saʊθ/.
Marina South is located directly south of the Downtown Core, bordered by Marina Channel to the east, Marina Bay to the north, and the Singapore Strait to the south. It is adjacent to Marina East and is closely linked with Rochor and Kallang through road and rail networks. Its prime waterfront position makes it a strategic extension of Singapore’s central business district.
Marina South, as of 2025, has not been split into subzones.
Marina South is well connected by major roads and expressways, including East Coast Parkway (ECP) and Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE). The area is also accessible by the Circle Line and Thomson-East Coast Line. Key MRT stations include:
As of 2025, Marina South has no major residential developments. However, the URA Master Plan has earmarked the area for up to 10,000 new homes in the coming decades. These are expected to be a mix of public housing and private apartments, designed as sustainable, car-lite neighbourhoods with green corridors and waterfront promenades2. Property analysts anticipate strong demand once housing projects are launched, given the location’s proximity to the CBD and Marina Bay.
While still largely under development, Marina South already features some key landmarks and leisure spaces:
At present, Marina South has no established residential community, but it plays an important recreational role. Locals and tourists visit Gardens by the Bay, use Marina South Pier for island-hopping, and enjoy waterfront walks and cycling. In the near future, Marina South is expected to transform into a vibrant mixed-use hub, seamlessly integrating living, working, and leisure in a waterfront environment.
Before its redevelopment, Marina South was famous for its open-air seafood restaurants and steamboat buffets in the 1980s and 1990s, which attracted families and night-time diners3.
