Kallang Place is a network of industrial roads located within the Kallang Planning Area of Singapore. It provides access between Kallang Bahru to the north and Boon Keng Road to the south, making it a strategic connector within the inner city. The road lies in Postal District 12, with Bendemeer MRT Station (DT23) on the Downtown Line being the closest mass transit access point.
Kallang Place is not a single thoroughfare but a small network of adjoining roads forming part of the Kallang Basin Industrial Estate. The roads here primarily serve industrial and commercial traffic, flanked by multi-storey factory complexes, warehouses, and ancillary offices. To its north, the roads open into Kallang Bahru, while to the south, traffic flows into Boon Keng Road, creating a link between two historically important sub-districts.
The streets surrounding Kallang Place include Kallang Avenue, Kallang Sector, and Bendemeer Road. Together, these create a dense grid of industrial service roads designed to accommodate logistics, delivery vehicles, and workers commuting into the estate. Despite its utilitarian look, the area is highly accessible and sits just minutes from the Central Business District (CBD).
Kallang Place developed during the post-independence years of Singapore, when the government was building planned industrial estates to support light and medium industries near the city centre. The estate was created in the 1960s–1970s, as part of the larger Kallang Basin Industrial Estate1. This estate was one of the earliest attempts to concentrate industrial activities into multi-storey factory complexes, thereby making efficient use of limited land while retaining close access to transport arteries such as the Central Expressway (CTE) and Pan-Island Expressway (PIE).
The name “Kallang” itself derives from the Malay word orang kallang, referring to a community of sea nomads who once lived around the Kallang Basin. “Place” in this context is a simple designation applied to smaller roads that do not qualify as main thoroughfares. In standard English spelling, the name is pronounced “Kah-lahng Pleis”. Its International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) representation is /ˈka.lɑːŋ pleɪs/.
The defining feature of Kallang Place is its role within the Kallang Basin Industrial Estate. The estate houses several clusters of flatted factories—multi-storey buildings designed for light manufacturing and logistics. Among them are:
These clusters support businesses such as small-scale electronics assembly, printing services, storage facilities, and offices for logistics providers. The area maintains a strong industrial character, with little residential presence directly on Kallang Place itself. Its utilitarian design reflects Singapore’s early industrialization strategy, when estates were intentionally located near the city to minimise commuting distances for workers and goods distribution.
While Kallang Place itself is dominated by industry, several attractions lie nearby:
Residential properties are not found along Kallang Place itself, but the surrounding area such as Boon Keng and Bendemeer host a mix of public housing (HDB) and private apartments. As of August 2025, resale HDB flats in the vicinity average around S$780 – S$900 per square foot (S$8,395 – S$9,687 per sq m)2. A standard 4-room flat of about 1,000 sq ft (93 sq m) could therefore cost between S$780,000 and S$900,000. Rentals average S$3,000 – S$3,800 per month for similar units3. This is generally lower than core central areas like Orchard or Marina, but higher than outlying estates such as Jurong or Woodlands.
The nearest MRT station is Bendemeer MRT Station (DT23) on the Downtown Line, located within walking distance. From there, commuters can easily transfer to the North East Line at Little India or to the East West Line at Bugis. Other nearby stations include Boon Keng (NE9) and Kallang (EW10).
Several bus stops serve the vicinity of Kallang Place, particularly along Kallang Bahru and Boon Keng Road, with routes linking to the CBD, eastern suburbs, and northern housing estates. This excellent connectivity makes the industrial estate attractive to businesses that require both manpower access and efficient distribution channels.
One fun fact about Kallang Place is that despite its highly industrial outlook, the estate is less than 10 minutes’ drive from the Civic District. It represents a unique contrast in Singapore: a zone where heavy-duty industrial activities coexist practically next door to cultural landmarks, shopping belts, and government offices. For many locals, the sight of large flatted factory complexes here is a reminder of Singapore’s transformation from a manufacturing hub to a modern metropolis.
