Choa Chu Kang North is a key residential subzone within Singapore, forming part of the larger Choa Chu Kang Planning Area. With its large public housing estates, vibrant amenities, and community facilities, it is one of the most densely populated subzones in the northwest region of the island.
Choa Chu Kang North covers an area of 1.089 square kilometres. It is bordered by Yew Tee to the north, Gali Batu to the east, Choa Chu Kang Central to the south, and Murai to the west. Its location gives it a strategic position within the planning area, connecting newer residential estates with central amenities and transport links.
As of 2024, Choa Chu Kang North has an estimated population of 30,790, making it one of the most populous subzones in the region. This translates into a very high population density of 28,283 persons per square kilometre. Between 2020 and 2024, the population decreased slightly by 0.90%, reflecting demographic shifts such as ageing households and smaller family sizes.
A subzone is an administrative division within a planning area that is designated by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA). These subzones provide a structured way to organise statistical data, plan infrastructure, and manage urban growth. The system of planning areas and subzones was introduced in the early 1990s1 as part of Singapore’s long-term urban development strategy.
Singapore is divided into 323 subzones across 55 planning areas2. While subzones are useful for planning and census purposes, they do not always correspond directly to how residents identify their neighbourhoods. For instance, most people would say they live in “Choa Chu Kang” rather than specifically “Choa Chu Kang North.”
The subzone is primarily residential, with a concentration of Housing and Development Board (HDB) estates. These developments are complemented by neighbourhood centres offering retail shops, clinics, childcare centres, and dining outlets. Schools, parks, and community facilities are also integrated into the housing environment, making the subzone largely self-sufficient.
Choa Chu Kang North benefits from good transport connectivity. Yew Tee MRT Station (NS5) on the North-South Line lies just to the north, providing direct access to the city centre and other parts of the island. The area is also served by several bus services linking to Choa Chu Kang MRT and Bus Interchange, ensuring convenient travel for residents.
While Choa Chu Kang North is primarily residential, it offers access to various amenities and recreational opportunities:
Choa Chu Kang North is a dense, vibrant subzone that plays a crucial role in supporting the residential needs of northwestern Singapore. Its strong community amenities, accessibility, and integration into the wider Choa Chu Kang Planning Area make it an essential hub for thousands of families.
