Bedok South Avenue 1 is a short arterial in eastern Singapore's Bedok Planning Area, running roughly 1.8 km from New Upper Changi Road in the north to the East Coast Parkway at the Laguna Flyover in the south. It threads residential precincts, low-rise clusters and several condominium developments, and provides a convenient local link to the ECP. 1
Bedok South Avenue 1 lies in District 16 within the Bedok town region. To the north it meets New Upper Changi Road; to the south it connects to the East Coast Parkway via the Laguna Flyover. Nearby roads and lanes include Bedok South Road, Bedok South Avenue 3, Bayshore Road and Tampines Expressway/connector ramps serving the east coast corridor. The Avenue forms part of the local grid that serves the Bayshore/Bedok South residential pocket.
The street is mainly residential in character. Along its length you will find a mix of public housing blocks, cluster/low-rise apartments and a handful of private condominiums. Landscaping and community parks punctuate the road, giving a suburban coastal feel rather than an urban high-rise streetscape. Traffic volumes are moderate — mostly local and commuter traffic heading to the ECP or to nearby town amenities.
The Bedok area was progressively developed from the mid-20th century onward as Singapore expanded eastwards. Bedok South Avenue 1 was laid out as part of the Bedok / Bayshore residential development scheme to provide access between inland roads and the coastal expressway; the road’s fabric reflects staged development through the late 20th century as housing and associated infrastructure were added. The precise date of the Avenue’s first construction is not published as a single milestone in public records, but its evolution followed the general post-war urbanisation and public housing programme of Bedok. 1
Why the name? — As with many Singapore streets, the name is descriptive: "Bedok" refers to the planning area; "South" distinguishes the cluster of streets in the southern Bedok / Bayshore precinct; "Avenue 1" follows the local street numbering convention. The road name is pronounced in everyday speech as “beh-dok south AV-uh-nyoo one” (common spelling: Bedok South Avenue 1). For the spoken pronunciation of Bedok, the usual IPA rendering is /bəˈdɒk/ (approx. “bə-DOHK”). 2
The nearest MRT access for residents is Bayshore MRT Station (TE29) on the Thomson-East Coast Line; this station started serving the Bayshore / Bedok-coastal area when the TEL section to Bayshore opened. 3
Bedok South Avenue 1 itself is served by a number of bus stops lining the avenue and adjacent roads. Frequent services connecting to Bedok town, the city and other eastern estates stop along the Avenue; examples of bus stop listings and the services that call there include stops labelled “Aft Bedok Sth Ave 1”, “Opp Eastern Lagoon II” and others served by routes such as 12/12e, 16/16M, 31, 38, 46, 48, 137, 155, 196 and 197. These stops provide links to Bedok interchange and feeder services for local travel. 4
For drivers the southern end opens directly onto the ECP via the Laguna Flyover, making access to the city and the airport straightforward at off-peak times; conversely, the ECP connection means some peak inbound/outbound commuter volumes at rush hours.
The Bedok / Bayshore pocket is regarded as an attractive east-coast residential area with a mix of HDB and private condominiums. Prices vary by tenure, development age and location. As a sample indicator, nearby private developments such as Bedok Residences have been listed at price ranges roughly between S$1,441–S$2,152 PSF (examples drawn from property listings in 2024–2025) for transacted or asking prices; rental listings in the Bedok / Bayshore area commonly range depending on unit size and location. 5

Although Bedok South Avenue 1 is residential and modest in length, the broader Bayshore/Bedok South precinct has been earmarked for improved connectivity — a new flyover project to better connect Bayshore to the ECP was announced in recent plans targeting completion by 2030, reflecting continued infrastructure investment in the area. 6
