Lorong Kuching, Pulau Tikus, Penang (14 March 2020)
Lorong Kuching is one of the minor roads in
Pulau Tikus, Penang. It connects Burmah Road with
Jalan Berjaya. At one time, the road was signaged
Lorong Kucing, but the latest roadsign of 2020 shows
Lorong Kuching.
Lorong Kuching was developed from the country lanes of the former Eurasian settlement of Pulau Tikus. The lane was named after cat, which is "kucing" in Malay (and not after the city of Kuching). In all likelihood, it was the Eurasians who gave the lane its name, long before it acquired is present form. It led south towards the estate of
Ayer Rajah, which today has become a leafy neighbourhood.
Most of the houses along Lorong Kuching today are modern-style residential properties built in the mid-20th century. There is a remnant of older houses from the early part of the 20th century that still stands on Lorong Kuching.
