Lorong Ceti, formerly known as Chetty Lane, is a minor road in George Town, Penang. It is located off Noordin Street, within the Seven Streets Precinct of the city. The lane is only about 35 meters in length. It is lined with Southern Chinese Eclectic Style double-storey terrace houses. I counted that there is a total of five houses on each side of the road, excluding the ones facing Noordin Street. There are diagonal parking lots on one side of the lane, making it impossible to u-turn out. One has to gingerly reverse out of the lane on entering.
At time of writing (January 2014), I have yet to determine how this lane get its name, whether it was named after the Chetty community (a group of Straits-born Indians), or whether it was named after someone by the name of Chetty.
For such a short and insignificant lane, Chetty Lane has three road signs, two on either sides at the Noordin Street junction, and one at the far end. By 2023, the road has seen much urban redevelopment, with the townhouses on both sides being restored. The ones on the northwest side of the road are now occupied by the Noordin One arcade and the hotel Citadines.
Getting there
The nearest bus stop is the Komtar Bus Terminal. From there, walk along Jalan Ria, cross Magazine Road then continue on McNair Street until you reach the intersection with Noordin Street. Turn right and go along Noordin Street until you reach the junction of Chetty Lane on your left.
