Andhra Pradesh is a state on the southeastern part of India facing the Bay of Bengal. It covers 275,045 sq km (106,195 sq mi), and is the fourth largest state in the country. It borders Odisha to the northeast, Chhattisgarh to the north, Maharashtra to the northwest, Karnataka to the west and Tamil Nadu to the south.
Andhra Pradesh had a population of 77 million people (2011 estimate). It was the fifth most populous state in India. The capital and largest city is Hyderabad. Following the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, the state was split on 2 June, 2014, to form the new state of Telangana. Hyderabad continues to serve as the joint capital for the next 10 years.
After the bifurcation, Andhra Pradesh has a population of 49.3 million people, making it the 10th largest state in India.
