Visakhapatnam is a port city on the southeast coast of India. Known locally as Vizag, it is the second biggest city in the state of Andhra Pradesh after Hyderabad, and the third largest city on the east coast of India after Kolkata and Chennai. It covers 543 sq km (210 sq mi) and has a population of 1.74 million people.

The city of Visakhapatnam was named after the Hindu god Visakha. It faces the Bay of Bengal to the east. The city was part of the Kingdom of Kalinga in 260 BC. From then until the 16th century AD it belonged to the Utkala Kingdom. Due to its long history, it was also mentioned in the Indian epics of Ramayana and Mahabrarata.

The people of Visakhapatnam generally speak Telugu, although it has also a large population of migrants from neighbouring districts that speak the Uttarandhra and Mandalikam dialects. In addition, there are small communities of Punjabis, Gujaratis, Oriyas, Bengalis, Nepalis and Malayalees working in the public sector. The common languages used for communication are Hindi and English.

Visakhapatnam experiences a tropical savanna climate. May is the hottest month here, when the average temperature rises to 37°C (99°F). The most comfortable time to visit is January, when the temperature drops to 23°C (73°F).

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
