Vijayawada is the third largest city in Andhra Pradesh, India. It is also the biggest city of Krishna District. With 1.5 million people (2012 estimate), it is just behind Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam in population. It was named after its patron deity, Vijaya, and its name means "land of victory".
The modern city of Vijayawada came about in the mid 19th century, when it grew out of a small village on the southern bank of the river Krishna. Today it is regarded as the agricultural capital of Andhra Pradesh.
Vijayawada experiences a tropical climate, with hottest months being May to June, when temperature touches 47°C (117°F). July is the wettest month, with precipitation of 218 mm (8.6 in).
The tourist attractions in Vijayawada comprises mostly temples. It also has a number of caves. The city has had communist local governments before, and this is reflected in the statues glorifying Communist leaders such as Lenin and Karl Marx in the city.
