Wilton Place is a short but distinguished street located in the affluent neighbourhood of Belgravia in the City of Westminster, central London. Stretching a modest 179 metres (587 feet) in length, this street plays a connecting role between Knightsbridge to the north and the elegant Wilton Crescent to the south. Along the way, it branches westward into Kinnerton Street and eastward into Rose Place.

Street Layout and Traffic

Wilton Place is a one-way street that allows northbound traffic only, running from Knightsbridge up towards Wilton Crescent. The road is generally quiet, reflecting the residential nature of the area, though it can experience moderate vehicle flow due to its proximity to major thoroughfares like Knightsbridge and Hyde Park Corner.

History and Development

Wilton Place was laid out during the early 19th century as part of the grand development of Belgravia by the Grosvenor family, one of Britain’s wealthiest aristocratic dynasties. The development followed the marriage alliance between the Grosvenors and the Egertons, Viscounts of Wilton. The street's name commemorates this connection, being named after the Egerton family’s hereditary title.

Wilton is pronounced WILL-t'n (/ˈwɪltən/ in IPA), with the 'o' largely silent and the stress placed on the first syllable.

Architectural Character

The character of Wilton Place is distinctly Georgian and early Victorian, with stately stucco-fronted houses and refined facades. The buildings are well-preserved and speak to the elegance typical of Belgravia’s town planning. Many of the properties are Grade II listed, adding to the sense of historical continuity and prestige.
