Kapitan Chung Keng Quee's Tomb
Kapitan Chung Keng Quee's Tomb (GPS: 5.45081, 100.29922), located on
Mount Erskine, is one of the grandest Chinese tombs in Penang. It is located off
Lebuh Halia 1.
According to the Wikipedia entry on Chung Keng Quee, his tomb dates to 1898, which means, it was built before he died. It was possibly set up when his wife died before him. It is possibly the largest Chinese tomb in Malaysia, a size that is usually the reserve of members of the Chinese imperial family or its highest ranking officials. It is also the only Chinese tomb in Malaysia to feature four life-size statues, called
weng chung, again, permitted only for tombs of officials of the first rank.
Although Chung Keng Quee died in December 1901, he was only laid to rest in 1904. For five months after his death, his remains were kept at his residence at Hai Kee Chan. Then, it was moved to a temporary vault awaiting his final interment. A few more years would pass before his grand funeral in 1904.
