Jalan Sena, Butterworth

Jalan Sena is a minor residential road located in the Raja Uda area of Butterworth. It extends from Jalan Raja Uda in the west to Tingkat Sena 2 in the east, functioning primarily as an access road for the houses along its length. Although short in distance, Jalan Sena offers a glimpse into the suburban character of Raja Uda, where modern housing estates coexist with more traditional homes.

The name “Sena” refers to the rain tree, or Albizia saman, a species of large, shady tree that has long been planted along roadsides in Malaysia and other tropical regions. The rain tree, known in Malay as pokok sena, is admired for its expansive canopy which provides shelter from the sun and rain. Naming the road after this tree reflects the common practice in Butterworth of using local plant species as road names, particularly within residential enclaves such as Raja Uda.

Jalan Sena is lined with residential properties on both sides. On the northern side, the houses are generally two-storey terrace units, offering more space for families and accommodating modern urban living. In contrast, the southern side is characterized by single-storey terrace houses, which were built earlier and cater to more compact household arrangements. This variation in house types along the same street gives Jalan Sena a distinctive and somewhat eclectic character, reflecting the gradual development of housing in the Raja Uda area.

The road itself is quiet and functions mostly as a neighbourhood access route, with minimal through traffic. It is connected internally to Tingkat Sena 2, which further links with other residential lanes in the Taman Sena enclave. The presence of both newer and older houses makes Jalan Sena an interesting case of gradual urban evolution, where traditional housing stock remains alongside more recent developments. This blend of architecture and community lifestyle typifies many of the smaller residential roads branching off from Jalan Raja Uda.
