St Francis Xavier Park is one of the urban parks proposed by the
George Town Special Area Plan. It is located within the grounds of the
St Francis Xavier Church. Covering some 6.43 acres - I suppose including the cemetery grounds - the park is probably entered via Northam Road and
Penang Road.
Appreciating the Historical Significance of this Site
The St Francis Xavier Church is significant as the earliest Tamil-speaking Catholic parishes in Penang. It is within the Catholic site of the Northam Road Cemetery, which is split between the
Protestant Cemetery facing
Northam Road and the Catholic Cemetery further in, towards the church. The cemetery itself predates the church, having been created in the late 18th century, when that part of town was still considered the outskirts of George Town.
