West Coast Road is an important roadway in the southwestern part of Singapore, extending about 2.7 kilometres. It begins at the junction with Jalan Buroh and West Coast Highway in the north and runs southward until it meets Pasir Panjang Road at the intersection with Clementi Road. Entirely within District 5, the road is part of the Clementi Planning Area. Though there is no MRT station immediately along it, the corridor serves as a vital link for industrial, residential, and port-related activities in this part of Singapore.
The road runs parallel to the West Coast Highway, creating a dual carriage corridor that allows heavy traffic to flow between Jurong, Tuas, and the central parts of Singapore. In its northern section, West Coast Road meets Jalan Buroh, a road heavily associated with industrial estates, warehouses, and logistics centres. Towards the south, it intersects with Pasir Panjang Road, a historic route tracing the old coastal line.
Branching roads and nearby routes include West Coast Crescent, West Coast Ferry Road, and Clementi Road. The proximity to Clementi Town connects the area to major residential neighbourhoods, while the road’s adjacency to the port links it directly to Singapore’s shipping and logistics infrastructure.
The history of West Coast Road is closely tied to Singapore’s port and industrial development. Much of the land along the West Coast was reclaimed from the sea during the mid-20th century as Singapore sought to expand port facilities and create space for industries. The road was laid out in the 1960s and 1970s, initially to provide access to the Pasir Panjang Wharves, which were expanding to handle growing trade volumes.
Over the decades, West Coast Road evolved into a key transport spine for the southern industrial belt. The construction of the West Coast Highway later complemented it, but West Coast Road remained essential for local access to smaller roads, housing estates, and service areas.
The name “West Coast” reflects its location along the southwestern coastline of Singapore. Prior to land reclamation, the coastline here was dotted with fishing villages and kampongs. The road was named to emphasise its coastal alignment.
Pronunciation: In common English, it is pronounced as “West Coast Road” /wɛst koʊst roʊd/ in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The straightforward name makes it one of the more internationally recognisable roads in Singapore, especially for expatriates working in the port and industrial sectors nearby.
The character of West Coast Road is defined by its mix of industrial, commercial, and residential influences. The northern stretches feature logistics centres, warehouses, and port-related facilities. Moving southwards, residential estates such as West Coast Gardens and several HDB precincts emerge, creating a blend of working and living environments.
The proximity to Clementi Town means the area benefits from well-established amenities including shopping malls, schools, and recreational parks. Traffic along West Coast Road tends to be heavy during working hours, as lorries and port vehicles share the road with local commuters.
Despite its utilitarian role, West Coast Road and its vicinity host several interesting sites:
Residential developments along West Coast Road and nearby Clementi are attractive for both families and investors. As of 2024, property prices in this area are generally more affordable compared to central and eastern districts of Singapore, though they have appreciated steadily due to proximity to NUS and one-north, a hub for research and technology industries.
Condominiums and landed properties in the vicinity range from 1,000 sq ft (93 sq m) apartments valued around SGD 1.4 million, to larger 2,000 sq ft (186 sq m) family homes exceeding SGD 2.8 million1. Rental yields are competitive, with a 3-bedroom unit (1,100 sq ft / 102 sq m) fetching between SGD 4,200 to SGD 4,800 per month2. The area’s balance of affordability, space, and connectivity makes it attractive for both locals and expatriates.
While no MRT stations are located directly along West Coast Road, several are within a short drive. Clementi MRT Station and Dover MRT Station on the East West Line serve the area to the northeast, while Kent Ridge MRT Station connects via the Circle Line. This means commuters can access both citybound and regional rail routes with relative ease.
Several bus stops are strategically placed along West Coast Road, providing direct services to Clementi Town Centre, Jurong East, Pasir Panjang, and the city. The buses serve as the main form of public transport for residents and workers commuting to and from the area.
A fun fact about West Coast Road is that it was once much closer to the sea. Land reclamation projects in the 1970s and 1980s pushed the coastline further south, meaning that what is now West Coast Park and parts of Pasir Panjang Terminal were once part of the ocean. This makes West Coast Road not only a transport artery but also a marker of Singapore’s evolving geography.
