Singapore Zoo, formerly called Singapore Zoological Gardens, is one of the major tourist attractions in Singapore. It occupies 28 hectares of land at Upper Seletar Reservoir within Singapore's forested central catchment area. The zoo was built at a cost of S$9m and opened on 23 June 1973. It is operated by Wildlife Reserves Singapore which also manages the Night Safari and the Jurong BirdPark.

There are about 315 species of animal in Singapore Zoo, of which some 16% are considered threatened species. It receives 1.4 million visitors a year.

Singapore Zoo followed the modern trend of displaying animals in naturalistic, 'open' exhibits, with hidden barriers, behind moats and shrubbery etc. It has the largest captive colony of orangutans in the world. The most famous resident of the zoo is Ah Meng, and orang utan that has become an icon of the Singapore tourism industry.

You can also buy the 3-in-1 and 2-in-1 Park Hopper tickets to enter the Jurong Bird Park, Night Safari and Singapore Zoo. The 2-in-1 ticket allows you entry to two of the three parks. The rates for the 3-in-1 Park Hopper tickets is S$45 for adults and S$28 for children, while for the 2-in-1, the rates are S$32 for adults and S$20 for children.

Getting there

Take the Singapore MRT to the following MRT stations and then take the bus:
  1. Ang Mo Kio MRT Station (NS16) then take bus 138 from the bus interchange.
  2. Choa Chu Kang station (NS4-BP1) then take bus 927 from the bus interchange.
