Serangoon MRT Station (GPS: 1.34943, 103.87368; NE12/CC13) is an underground Mass Rapid Transit interchange station in Singapore, serving both the North-East Line (NEL) and the Circle Line (CCL). It sits beneath the Nex shopping complex and above the Serangoon Bus Interchange at the heart of the Serangoon town-centre. This station is a key interchange hub linking residential, commercial and transport activity in the north-east of Singapore.
The station is located at 600 Upper Serangoon Road / 21 Serangoon Central, Singapore. 3 It lies within the Serangoon Planning Area in Singapore’s North-East Region and falls under Postal District 19, covering a dense residential estate and town-centre environment. 1
The North-East Line portion of Serangoon MRT Station opened on 20 June 2003, as part of the initial NEL rollout. 1 Later, under the Circle Line expansion, the CCL platforms opened on 28 May 2009, converting the station into a full interchange. 1
Serangoon MRT Station serves two lines: the North-East Line (station code NE12) and the Circle Line (station code CC13). 3
On the North-East Line the adjacent stations are NE11 Woodleigh (towards Punggol) and NE13 Kovan (towards HarbourFront). 3 On the Circle Line the adjacent stations are CC12 Bartley (towards HarbourFront) and CC14 Lorong Chuan (towards Dhoby Ghaut). 3
This station is directly integrated with the Serangoon Bus Interchange, enabling seamless transfers between bus and MRT. 3 Numerous bus stops surround the station, serving both local estate routes and longer-distance services. 3
A major draw is the Nex shopping mall located directly above the station, offering retail, dining, cinema and direct access to the MRT. The wider Serangoon Town Centre area around the station features a mix of residential blocks, community amenities, and vibrant eating spots — making the station a focal point of the neighbourhood. 1
The station showcases three different public artworks: “Memories of Childhood” by Eng Joo Heng on the NEL side, “View of Life” by Sarkasi Said on the CCL concourse, and “Matrix” seating pieces on the CCL platforms. 3
Also, the station has one of the deeper platform stacks in the system — the Circle Line platforms are built beneath the North-East Line platforms — making it a compact but functionally complex interchange hub. 3
By virtue of its dual-line interchange status, central position in a lively town centre and strong transport links via MRT and bus, strong Serangoon MRT Station is more than just a transit stop — it is the heart of one of Singapore’s dynamic residential and retail precincts. Whether you’re transferring between lines, heading to shopping at Nex or exploring the Serangoon neighbourhood, the station provides both convenience and character.
