Pasir Panjang 1 is a subzone within the Queenstown Planning Area of Singapore. Situated close to the coastline, it blends residential areas, educational institutions, and port-related activities. The subzone is located north of the Port Subzone and is neighboured by Kent Ridge, Pasir Panjang 2, and Clementi West, making it a strategic area with a mix of housing, business, and logistics.
The name Pasir Panjang is Malay for “long sand,” a reference to the long stretch of sandy beach that once lined the area’s southern coastline. In Chinese, it is written as 巴西班让 (pinyin: Bāxībānràng). The toponym reflects the area’s historic association with fishing villages and its coastal setting before extensive land reclamation transformed the shoreline.
Pasir Panjang has a long history, dating back to its days as a coastal kampong lined with coconut plantations and fishing settlements. In the colonial era, it became an important staging ground for port and military activities, with the Pasir Panjang Ridge serving as a strategic defence line during World War II. Over the decades, urbanisation reshaped the landscape, with housing estates, educational facilities, and commercial centres replacing older settlements. The subzone today reflects this layered history, retaining traces of its heritage alongside modern development.
Pasir Panjang 1 is located inland from the southern coast, bordered by National University of Singapore Subzone to the north, Kent Ridge to the northeast, Pasir Panjang 2 to the southeast, and the Port Subzone to the south. To the northwest, it shares boundaries with Clementi West and Clementi Woods. The terrain is hilly, with the Pasir Panjang Ridge running through the area, and much of its land use divided between residential zones and port-related infrastructure.
As of 2024, Pasir Panjang 1 has a population of 4,750. With an area of 1.085 sq km, this translates to a population density of 4,379 per sq km. The population has seen modest growth of 1.3% since 2020, reflecting gradual residential expansion and the appeal of the area for families and working professionals seeking proximity to education hubs and employment centres.
The subzone is characterised by its mix of uses: residential housing, small-scale commercial establishments, institutional facilities, and areas linked to port operations. The proximity of the Port Subzone gives it a semi-industrial character, while nearby ridges and green buffers provide a sense of balance. The area is also known for educational and research institutions associated with the National University of Singapore, contributing to its reputation as an academic and professional hub.
Pasir Panjang 1 is well served by public transport. The Pasir Panjang MRT Station on the Circle Line connects the subzone to other parts of Singapore, making commuting to the city and the western region convenient. Roads in the area link to the West Coast Highway and the Ayer Rajah Expressway, providing direct routes to the Central Business District and Jurong. Bus services complement the MRT system, ensuring strong local and regional connectivity.
Residents of Pasir Panjang 1 benefit from access to nearby amenities such as shopping centres, hawker centres, and recreational facilities. While much of the subzone is residential, nearby areas such as Clementi and Queenstown provide larger malls and entertainment hubs. Green spaces like Kent Ridge Park and West Coast Park are also easily accessible, offering residents opportunities for outdoor activities and family recreation.
The identity of Pasir Panjang 1 is shaped by its location at the interface between residential neighbourhoods and port activities. It is often seen as a quieter alternative to more urbanised districts, attracting residents who appreciate its mix of greenery, accessibility, and coastal heritage. The presence of institutions and international residents gives it a cosmopolitan character while still retaining elements of traditional community living.
Residential options in Pasir Panjang 1 include private condominiums, landed properties, and boutique apartments. Unlike other subzones of Queenstown, it does not have extensive HDB housing, but nearby estates in Clementi West and Queenstown offer such options. Condominiums such as The Orient, Bijou, and Pepys Hill Condominium are notable for their proximity to transport links and amenities. Property prices are generally higher due to the area’s exclusivity and coastal appeal, with rental units particularly attractive to expatriates working at NUS or in the port and logistics industries.
Pasir Panjang played a critical role during the Battle of Singapore in 1942, when the Malay Regiment fought valiantly along Pasir Panjang Ridge against Japanese forces. Today, the Reflections at Bukit Chandu museum, located just outside the subzone, commemorates this important episode of Singapore’s wartime history.
