One-North Avenue, Singapore

One-North Avenue is a short but strategically important road in Singapore, measuring about 800 metres. It connects Ayer Rajah Avenue in the northwest to Portsdown Avenue in the southeast, lying entirely within postal District 5 and in the Queenstown Planning Area. The road runs through the heart of the one-north innovation district, linking key R&D, tech and residential nodes. The nearest MRT station is One-North MRT (CC23) on the Circle Line, providing seamless connectivity to the wider MRT network.

Quick Facts

History & Development

The one-north precinct was conceptualised in Singapore’s first National Technology Plan in 1991 and later formalised under the Technopreneurship 21 (T21) strategy in the late 1990s. 6 The master plan for one-north aimed to cluster biomedical, infocomm, media and technology clusters around the Buona Vista / Holland area, creating a “live, work, play, learn” environment. 218 One-North Avenue was laid out during early site planning to provide internal connectivity between Ayer Rajah Avenue and internal arterial routes such as Portsdown. As the precinct evolved, its streets including One-North Avenue became integral to linking research, commercial and residential projects. 7

Name & Significance

The name “one-north” is derived from Singapore’s geographic position—approximately one degree north of the equator. 19 The precinct name was chosen in 2006 when the MRT station and precinct branding were formalised. 0 One-North Avenue thus inherits the name as a primary road through the precinct, reflecting the identity of the entire innovation district.

Character & Surroundings

Though relatively short, One-North Avenue is urban in character, lined with low- to mid-rise tech parks, corporate offices, commercial spaces and parts of residential developments. Its role is primarily as an internal connector rather than a heavy-traffic highway. Pedestrian walkways, sheltered paths, greenery and public plazas are common, consistent with the precinct’s emphasis on walkability and livability. 11

Transport & Accessibility

Nearest MRT Station

The key mass transit station serving this road is One-North MRT (CC23) on the Circle Line (Downtown extension), connecting to Buona Vista, Labrador, and Marina Bay. 015 The station was named “one-north” officially in 2006 over competing options "Portsdown" and "Ayer Rajah." 0

Bus Links & Local Routes

Bus stops along Slim Barracks Road, Ayer Rajah Drive and nearby precinct roads serve One-North Avenue indirectly. These buses connect to Buona Vista, Commonwealth, Holland Village, and MRT interchanges. The precinct is also designed to encourage walking and cycling, with sheltered walkways between major nodes.

Fun Facts & Local Highlights

A fun fact: the name “one-north” reflects Singapore’s location nearly one degree north of the equator. 19 The precinct, and hence its namesake avenue, is among the few in Singapore with a branding of scientific and innovation identity built into the place naming.

Another point of interest: one-north was designed as an integrated cluster of work, live, and play spaces. 221 One-North Avenue plays a small but vital role in this layout by connecting research, commercial and lifestyle zones. The presence of open landscapes and architectural planning by firms such as Zaha Hadid in the precinct has shaped the fluid spatial design around One-North Avenue. 7
