Covering 1.712 square kilometres, it had an estimated population of 10,100 in 2024, with a population density of 5,900 per sq km1. Mountbatten is a mature neighbourhood known for its mix of public HDB flats, private housing, and established community amenities.

Etymology

The subzone name Mountbatten (蒙巴顿, Méngbādùn in pinyin) originates from Lord Louis Mountbatten, the British naval officer and statesman. The name reflects Singapore’s colonial-era practice of naming areas after prominent British figures. It does not refer to a literal “mount” or hill, as the terrain is largely flat.

History

Mountbatten was developed from the 1950s onwards as part of Singapore’s post-war urban expansion. Originally comprising landed properties and smaller residential enclaves, the area saw significant HDB development in the 1970s and 1980s. Its proximity to the coast and central-eastern Singapore made it attractive for families seeking convenient access to the city and recreational facilities.

Geography and Boundaries

Mountbatten is located in the southeastern part of Singapore. It is bordered by Aljunied to the northwest, Geylang East to the northeast, Katong to the east, Marine Parade to the southeast, Marina East to the south, and Tanjong Rhu to the west. The area features gently sloping terrain with mostly residential land use.

Families dominate the demographic profile, with a mix of young professionals and retirees.

Land Use and Character

The subzone combines public HDB flats, private condominiums, and a few low-rise landed homes. HDB estates dominate the western part, while private housing is concentrated near the eastern and coastal fringes. Mountbatten has a suburban character with quiet residential streets, small retail clusters, and local amenities supporting the daily needs of its residents.

Mountbatten enjoys good connectivity through major roads including Mountbatten Road, Old Airport Road, and Marine Parade Road. It is served by bus routes connecting to central and eastern Singapore. Nearby MRT stations include Mountbatten MRT Station (Circle Line) and Aljunied MRT Station (East-West Line), providing easy access to the city and other residential areas. The East Coast Parkway is accessible within a few minutes’ drive.

Mountbatten is home to several community amenities including Mountbatten Community Club, schools, childcare centres, and recreational spaces. Nearby East Coast Park offers residents a range of outdoor activities, from jogging and cycling to water sports. Local hawker centres, markets, and retail shops cater to daily living needs, strengthening the sense of community in the subzone.
