Maritime Square Subzone is a key district within the Bukit Merah Planning Area in Singapore. It is strategically located along the southern waterfront and is best known for hosting major retail hubs, transport interchanges, and the gateway to Sentosa Island. The area has a unique mix of residential enclaves, large-scale commercial centres, and maritime-related facilities.
Maritime Square spans 2.663 square kilometres1. The subzone is bordered by:
The waterfront position of Maritime Square makes it a highly strategic subzone, serving both as a residential district and a major node for commerce, leisure, and maritime activities.
As of 2024, Maritime Square has a population of 4,8201. With its land area, this translates to a population density of 1,810 per square kilometre. While relatively low compared to other subzones, this is due to the presence of large commercial and transport facilities that limit residential space. From 2020 to 2024, the population grew by 7.4%, highlighting the growing attractiveness of its waterfront developments and improved residential offerings.
Maritime Square is best known for its role as a gateway to Sentosa Island, with HarbourFront MRT Station and the Sentosa Express monorail directly connecting the mainland to the resort island. It also hosts VivoCity, one of Singapore’s largest shopping malls, and HarbourFront Centre, which integrates retail, offices, and ferry terminal services.
In addition to its retail and leisure offerings, Maritime Square has residential pockets including HDB flats and private developments. Its residents enjoy proximity to both urban conveniences and seaside recreational opportunities. The presence of ferry services to regional destinations, as well as proximity to the port, further enhances its maritime identity.
The subzone is exceptionally well connected. HarbourFront MRT Station, an interchange for the North East Line and Circle Line, anchors the district’s transport network. The subzone is also a major bus hub and includes the HarbourFront Bus Interchange. Road links such as Telok Blangah Road and Keppel Road provide direct access to the Central Business District and western Singapore.
Maritime Square is widely seen as a vibrant lifestyle and transport hub. Its identity is strongly tied to leisure, shopping, and maritime activities. The district also plays a role in Singapore’s broader urban strategy of developing the southern waterfront, which is expected to undergo further transformation as port activities shift to Tuas in the coming decades.
