KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) (GPS: 1.31055, 103.8468) is the largest medical facility in Singapore dedicated to women’s and children’s health. Established in 1858 as a small maternity hospital, it has grown into a world-class institution specialising in obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics, and neonatology. Today, KKH serves as a referral centre for complex cases and provides comprehensive care to women and children across the nation.
The hospital began as the Kandang Kerbau Hospital in 1858, located on Serangoon Road. Initially a maternity hospital, it became famous for delivering nearly half of Singapore’s babies in the mid-20th century. In 1966, the hospital set a Guinness World Record for the highest number of births in a single maternity hospital in one year, with over 39,000 deliveries1. In 1997, the hospital moved to its current site along Bukit Timah Road and was renamed KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
KKH is located at 100 Bukit Timah Road, on the edge of the city centre. It is well-served by public transport:
Motorists can also reach the hospital conveniently via the Central Expressway (CTE) and Pan-Island Expressway (PIE).
KKH provides a wide range of specialist services, including:
As part of the SingHealth cluster, KKH plays an important role in medical education and research. It trains healthcare professionals in obstetrics, gynaecology, and paediatrics, and conducts pioneering research in women’s and children’s health. Its collaborations with local and international institutions enhance knowledge and improve healthcare outcomes2.
KKH is deeply involved in public health initiatives. It runs outreach programmes on maternal health, child nutrition, and vaccinations. Health talks, parenting workshops, and wellness campaigns are also organised to promote preventive healthcare in the community.
In the 1960s, nearly every Singaporean family had a child delivered at Kandang Kerbau Hospital. At its peak, one in every five babies born in the world each year was delivered at this hospital3.
