Singapore Cenotaph

The Singapore Cenotaph (GPS: 1.29028, 103.85384) is one of the monuments at the Esplanade Park in Singapore. It is erected to honor those who perished in the war, particularly the 124 Singaporean men who died in World War I. The Cenotaph was designed by Denis Santry of Swan & McClaren, and is said to be modelled after the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London. The foundation stone laid by Sir Lawrence Nunns Guillemard, the Governor of the Straits Settlement, on 15 November 1920.

The Cenotaph was unveiled on 31 March 1922 to honor the dead of World War I. The steps leading to up the Cenotaph is engrave with the years when World War I was fought. At the end of World War II, however, the reverse side of the Cenotaph is also engrave to honor those who died in the second World War.
