Damansara and Petaling Jaya: Understanding Their Relationship is a guide to one of the Klang Valley's most frequently misunderstood geographical relationships. Many people who live in Damansara neighbourhoods say they live in Petaling Jaya, and in many cases they are correct. However, not every place bearing the Damansara name lies within Petaling Jaya, and conversely, much of Petaling Jaya is not part of Damansara. Understanding the distinction requires appreciating both the historical development of the Damansara region and the administrative boundaries of Petaling Jaya.1
The answer is no. While many of the best-known Damansara neighbourhoods are located within Petaling Jaya, the Damansara region extends beyond the city. Likewise, Petaling Jaya contains many neighbourhoods that have never been considered part of Damansara.2
In everyday conversation, residents of neighbourhoods such as Damansara Utama, Damansara Jaya, Mutiara Damansara, Damansara Perdana and Kota Damansara often say they live in Petaling Jaya because these areas fall within the city or are closely associated with it. However, this does not mean that all Damansara localities are part of Petaling Jaya.
The majority of Selangor neighbourhoods carrying the Damansara name are administered by the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and are generally regarded as part of Petaling Jaya.
These neighbourhoods form the heart of the modern Damansara region within Petaling Jaya. They are linked by major roads such as Jalan Damansara, the Sprint Expressway and the Damansara–Puchong Expressway (LDP), as well as the MRT Kajang Line. Commercial centres, shopping malls and business districts in these areas contribute significantly to Petaling Jaya's economy.3
Not every Damansara locality falls within Petaling Jaya.
Damansara Heights (Bukit Damansara) is located within the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur under the administration of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL). Although it gave the wider Damansara region much of its identity, it has never been part of Petaling Jaya.
Bandar Sri Damansara is another important exception. Although it bears the Damansara name and is commonly associated with the wider Damansara region, it falls under the jurisdiction of the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) rather than Petaling Jaya City Council. As a result, it is geographically part of Greater Kuala Lumpur but administratively separate from Petaling Jaya.4
A large proportion of Petaling Jaya has no historical or geographical connection with Damansara. The city comprises numerous districts that developed independently and retain their own identities.
Examples include:
Although some of these neighbourhoods lie immediately adjacent to Damansara districts, they have different historical origins and are generally not regarded as part of the Damansara region. For example, Ara Damansara incorporates the Damansara name but was developed much later and is usually identified as a distinct township within Petaling Jaya rather than as part of the traditional Damansara corridor.5
The confusion arises because "Damansara" refers to a geographical region, whereas "Petaling Jaya" is a city. Many Damansara neighbourhoods happen to be located within Petaling Jaya, so residents naturally identify with both names. A person living in Damansara Utama may accurately describe their address as being in both Damansara and Petaling Jaya.
The widespread use of the Damansara name by successive township developments has also contributed to the confusion. Beginning with Damansara Heights in Kuala Lumpur, the name was later adopted by numerous residential developments in Selangor. Over time, Damansara became both a regional identity and a collection of individual neighbourhood names.6
In summary, most of the well-known Selangor Damansara neighbourhoods are indeed located within Petaling Jaya, but the two names are not interchangeable. Damansara extends beyond Petaling Jaya to include Damansara Heights in Kuala Lumpur and Bandar Sri Damansara under Selayang, while Petaling Jaya itself encompasses many districts that are not part of Damansara. Understanding this distinction helps explain why residents may legitimately describe themselves as living in both Damansara and Petaling Jaya, depending on whether they are referring to the geographical region or the administrative city.
