Damansara Utama is a bustling and well-established township located in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. It is part of the greater Damansara area, which includes nearby neighbourhoods such as Bandar Utama and Damansara Jaya. The township is approximately 12 kilometres west of central Kuala Lumpur, and is today one of the most vibrant suburban commercial hubs in the Klang Valley, particularly known for its commercial enclave, Damansara Uptown.
Damansara Utama was developed in the late 1980s as part of Petaling Jaya’s westward expansion. Its strategic location between Kuala Lumpur and Subang Jaya made it highly attractive for both residential and commercial growth. The area’s most famous landmark, Damansara Uptown, grew from a modest row of shophouses into one of Petaling Jaya’s most prominent business districts, attracting offices, banks, cafés, and boutiques.
Damansara Utama is regarded as a mature township with a mix of residential, commercial, and corporate zones. The residential section primarily consists of landed terrace homes and some low-rise condominiums, while the commercial heart—Damansara Uptown—is densely packed with office towers, cafés, restaurants, and retail outlets. The area has a reputation for being one of Petaling Jaya’s most convenient and self-sufficient suburbs.
As of October 2025, landed homes in Damansara Utama are highly sought-after, with double-storey terrace houses typically priced between RM1.4 million and RM2.2 million. Condominiums in the vicinity are priced from around RM600,000 upward, while monthly rental for a standard terrace home ranges from RM3,500 to RM5,000 depending on condition and proximity to Uptown.
Damansara Utama is well connected by major highways including the Lebuhraya Damansara-Puchong (LDP, E11) and the SPRINT Expressway (E23). The township also benefits from proximity to the Bandar Utama MRT Station and Taman Tun Dr Ismail MRT Station on the Kajang Line, providing convenient access to Kuala Lumpur and Kajang. Local bus routes and taxis serve the area extensively, with Rapid KL services connecting Uptown to other Petaling Jaya neighbourhoods.
While Damansara Utama is not a major tourist destination, it is a local hotspot for dining and leisure. The Uptown commercial area features an abundance of cafés, boutique shops, and small restaurants, while larger shopping options such as 1 Utama Shopping Centre are just a short drive away. The township’s convenient location also makes it a popular base for professionals working in Kuala Lumpur and nearby business districts.
A unique feature of Damansara Utama is the extensive network of pedestrian bridges linking parts of Uptown, making it one of the few suburban business areas in Malaysia designed with walkability in mind. The area’s distinctive blue “Uptown” signage has also become a recognizable landmark among Klang Valley residents.
