Kajang is a major town in the Hulu Langat District of Selangor, located about 20 km southeast of Kuala Lumpur. Known as the “Satay Town” of Malaysia, Kajang has evolved from a quiet settlement into one of the most vibrant suburban centres in the Klang Valley. It combines old-world charm with rapid urbanisation, offering residents and visitors a mix of traditional Malay culture, modern developments, and excellent connectivity to nearby towns such as Balakong, Bangi, and Cheras. 1
Kajang traces its origins to the late 19th century when it was established as a settlement by the Minangkabau and Mandailing communities. The town developed rapidly as an agricultural and trading hub, known for rubber and tin in its early years. 2
Its name is said to derive from the Malay word kajang, meaning “palm leaf thatching”, used for roofing in early Malay houses. Over time, Kajang grew into a significant administrative and commercial centre for the surrounding villages, eventually becoming one of Selangor’s key suburban towns. 3
